Crowdsourcing

Crowdsourcing (MIT Press Essential Knowledge) - Daren C Brabham Interesting little technology book! I did learn a lot about crowdsourcing! I had not heard of the companies he mentioned the most, but I did know about Amazon's Mechanical Turk.... A good read for anyone interested in the subject!

The Erotic Engine: How Pornography has Powered Mass Communication, from Gutenberg to Google

The Erotic Engine: How Pornography has Powered Mass Communication, from Gutenberg to Google - Patchen Barss Interesting read! A little of it was kind of disturbing!

The first third of the book was pre-Gutenberg, but once the computer stuff started happening, it was hard to put down. Porn has driven technology, so I guess we have to give it some credit in the respect that most of us can benefit from broadband, 500 cable channels, etc! He covers all the topics like the vcr format battle (but not the dvd battle), cable, pay channels, PayPal and the like, etc.

The future seems really strange though, the stuff that is coming down the pike! I won't give any spoilers, you are going to have to read this one yourself! :-)

NOOK Tablet For Dummies

Nook Tablet For Dummies - Corey Sandler Unfortunately, tablets and computers change so quickly that printed information can become outdated very quickly.... This must be taken into mind when reading this book! There are a lot of helpful tips for new users, like myself, but it only goes so far as things have changed since this book was written!

I very recently got a Nook and LOVE it! It is my very first e-reader of any type and it is definitely going to be increasing the number of books that I read. When I first got it, it did take a while to get used to as things do run a little differently than on a computer. These tablets are amazing and with their recent addition of the Google Play store, you are able to turn your Nook into a fully functioning tablet, great for all media, games, etc!

One thing that the Nook is missing that the Kindle has is a camera. Not a big deal for me, considering the price difference!

Anyway, this is NOT a review of my Nook, but rather a book review! lol!
Even though some things have changed since publication, it still is worth picking up for anyone who is brand new to e-readers or tablets in general. I was able to pick up a lot by just playing around myself, but there definitely are tips that I did not know.

Check it out!

The Millionaire Dropout: Fire Your Boss. Do What You Love. Reclaim Your Life!

The Millionaire Dropout: Fire Your Boss. Do What You Love. Reclaim Your Life! - Vince Stanzione Good read for anyone wanting to get into business for themselves! Full of great tips! The first part of the book is all about determining what you want out of life. Later, it gets into the meat with lots of links and ideas. I ran my own business for years and I used a lot of these techniques! I'm sure I would have made more money had I followed some of these tips! Others, I thought were a little far-fetched, but on the whole, there are enough good ideas here to make it well worth the purchase and read! Recommended!
The World's Strongest Librarian: A Memoir of Tourette's, Faith, Strength, and the Power of Family - Josh Hanagarne I am SO glad that the author put Librarian in the title! Otherwise, I may have otherwise missed this gem of a book! I had a hard time putting it down. Not a lot about libraries, but there are some funny stories in there about his work. The majority of the book is about his life in general and a lot of it relates to his difficult struggle with Tourette's. Starting from his childhood and through his adult life, it had been hard. Yet, he never seemed to lose hope! I am not going to give any spoilers here, but let's just say that if you are at all interested in the struggles of Tourette's, this would be an excellent read! Actually, even if you aren't, it is still an excellent read!
Sixpence House: Lost in A Town Of Books - Paul Collins Very interesting read about a man who decides to pack up his family and move to Hay-on-Wye, the "Town of Books"! 1,500 people and 40 bookstores! Sounds like a dream to me! Excellent memoir! Not all about books, but it delves into their day to day adventures... Pick this one up! Highly recommended!
One Book in the Grave - Kate Carlisle Interesting, light read! I love books about books, but this one is more about a book binder, although it does have to do with one book in particular! And, all the mystery that surrounds it.... This was listed as a mystery, but it is more of a mystery/romance novel. I would have given it five stars, except that I personally didn't care for the romance aspect of it as much. If you are into books, mysteries and romances, this one is a must read! It was a little hard to put down! I wasn't expecting the ending and wasn't disappointed, which is a great thing in a book. Story line holds up well! I will be looking for more from this author. Definitely recommended!
Does Jesus Really Love Me?: A Gay Christian's Pilgrimage in Search of God in America - Jeff Chu An excellent book that delves into the lives of gay Christians all over the US. Full of stories from people from various mainline Protestant denominations and how they coped with being gay in their respective churches.

You will NOT find bible passages about homosexuality here and a discussion of whether it it right or wrong. If you are looking for something like that, I would suggest that you look elsewhere.

Rather, you will find a hard to put down book about interesting people and how they came to find their spirituality, sometimes against all odds!

Definitely recommended!
Thieves of Book Row: New York's Most Notorious Rare Book Ring and the Man Who Stopped It - Travis McDade Great read! I did get a bit bogged down with all the different characters, otherwise, this would be a definite 5 star book! A learned a lot as I never even considered the amount of theft that happens at libraries, even to this day. When I was selling books, I would always avoid ex-library copies as they were less valuable with their markings. Never stopping to realize that they were a treasure trove of rare and very valuable manuscripts! I found it amazing that certain of the thieves would specialize in removing the library marks and that it is quite the art! Some of the book even takes place in my home town!

Definitely recommended for anyone who loves books about books! I will be on the lookout for this author's other book!

The Tao of Twitter

The Tao of Twitter: Changing Your Life and Business 140 Characters at a Time - Mark Schaefer Fun read about Twitter! I don't have an account, but I have "tried" to follow certain hash tags in the past. After reading this book, I have an whole list of web sites offer helpful ways to do that way more easily! You can even find local or trending topics, etc... I am almost afraid to sign up for an account now that I know a lot more about it! lol!

If you don't "get" Twitter, this is the book for you! Don't blame me if you spend hours on it though using all the tips from the book! It's the author's fault!
Social Media Is Bullshit - B.J. Mendelson Interesting read about using social media for your business. If you are thinking about paying someone to get your business up and running using FB and Twitter, think again! Just read this book and save yourself a LOT of money! If I was trying to get a new business off the ground, this book would gotten five stars! Still an interesting read though!
Banished: Surviving My Years in the Westboro Baptist Church - Lauren Drain, Lisa Pulitzer A must read! I really enjoyed this book! A true story of a woman growing up in the very controversial Westboro Baptist Church. An excellent loo at the day to day life of this small group who has their own interpretation of the Bible, which is not up for discussion!

As the title is Banished, I am not giving away anything by saying that she was eventually banished from the Church and her family....

Somewhat disturbing, but a great read for Christians, especially! Recommended!
Big Disconnect: The Story of Technology and Loneliness - Giles Slade Interesting book on technology.... Other subjects thrown in there, too, but I would definitely recommend this one, overall! How we are affected by technology...
Lost and Found: Unexpected Revelations About Food and Money - Geneen Roth I never expected to enjoy this book as much as I did! Very well-written and held my attention! She was devastated when she lost all her money investing with Bernie Madoff. This book is about the aftermath and how she deals with both food and money. Recommended!
Context: Further Selected Essays on Productivity, Creativity, Parenting, and Politics in the 21st Century - Cory Doctorow I loved this book! It is a collection of essays, but they all seemed right up my alley! Most of them are about computers and the net... A must read!
Hack: Stories from a Chicago Cab - Dmitry Samarov Decent read about a cab driver and his fares. I would have given it more stars as it is a good read, however, I found it to be a bit choppy. Short vignettes that could have been made a bit more interesting!
