Hello, Booklikes!!!!!

Hi!

I am so happy to have found your community! I am currently awaiting importation of all my gr stuff! I love to read and have only just recently gotten into e-reading! Looking forward to meeting like minded people and finding even more books for my to-read shelf! lol!

The Boyfriend App - Katie Sise I loved this book! A contest for high school kids to write an app! It wasn't overly technical, but there were some juicy hacking moments! :-) I did find part of it a bit silly, but the way that part was concluded was great... Makes me wonder how much of this stuff is real? Run out and get your "BuyPhone" now, lol! Great read for any ya reader interested in technology.... Lots of romance included, too, not too sappy, imho... Typical high school stuff. Interesting characters and storyline kept me turning the pages! Recommended!
Boring: Finding an Extraordinary God in an Ordinary Life - Michael Kelley I received this book as part of the Goodreads first-read program. I really enjoyed it! The author is able to talk about ordinary events in everyone's lives and make them extraordinary! Eating breakfast with your children is not just breakfast! When God and spirituality is a part of your daily life, you realize that you are not boring and ordinary....

He goes through all different parts of a normal life, for most people, and intersperses bible quotes into the discussion, making them relevant to our daily lives. This is a very easy to read book, you don't have to have any theological background at all to read and apply the teachings!

I would have given this 5 stars as it is interesting and very well written. However, I have just a few minor issues with a few things, but that is just me... I am not a theologian, so I will not bring up these very minor points here, nor do I think this is the place to do it! That being said, the book really is for everyone, no matter what religion or denomination! It is biblically based, so it is written mainly for Christians, but I believe anyone can be helped by this book! Don't let what you think is an ordinary boring life get you down, pick up this book instead!

Thank you for the opportunity to read this one!

Vend U.

Vend U. - Nancy Springer WoW! What a fun story! Reminded me of a Stephen King or a Twilight Zone episode! Very well written! I couldn't stop turning the pages and read it in one sitting. I definitely was not anticipating what happened! Definitely recommended!
The Distraction Addiction: Getting the Information You Need and the Communication You Want, Without Enraging Your Family, Annoying Your Colleagues, and Destroying Your Soul - Alex Soojung-Kim Pang I was really looking forward to this book, but I found myself disappointed... I was easily distracted while reading it, maybe all the talk of distractions kept me thinking of going online! I found the book to be a bit choppy, but there is some good advice! I am not one that is constantly texting or checking facebook, so, if you are, you may find this a much better read than I did!

He talks about meditation, which is a wonderful idea to relax your mind... Also, about taking a digital sabbath, where you turn off your various screens and do real world stuff!

I found it very interesting that the author speaks of switch-tasking rather than multi-tasking, which is mostly what we hear about. But, most of us are really just switching from one task to another. This makes us less productive on the whole!

Definitely recommended for anyone who is addicted to being constantly connected and wants to change!

Angel's Code (Angel Hacker #1)

Angel's Code (Angel Hacker #1) - H.A. Somerled Excellent read! Had a hard time putting this one down! It is not overly technical, so it is easily readable by anyone.... And, it is not just about hacking! The author is able to draw you in to the story and keeps it going. Definitely recommended, looking forward to the next book!
Cotton Tenants: Three Families - James Agee, Walker Evans, John Summers, Adam Haslett WoW! I picked this up at the library, thinking it would be a quick and easy read.... Boy, was I wrong! It was written a long time ago and portrays another world that I really had no idea about! It definitely is NOT politically correct! It follows the lives of three white families who are tenants on farms and "borrow" seed, fertilizer, etc from the landowners to be paid back when the harvest is ready. They are told what, when and where to plant. What abject poverty it portrays! And, such back breaking work. Education is sacrificed for farm work and health care is rare.... Even shoes are rare!

An excellent portrayal of tenant farming in the Southern United States!

Hoke (A Fly-On-The-Wall Thriller, #1) - Vivien Braslau I totally loved this book! Don't be fooled by the cover, the title or the beginning! It is definitely a Great read!!!! Unfortunately, the cover reminds me of something from the 1950's, but, this one is up-to-date! I won't give away the plot, but the story is very relevant to what is going on in the world today.... I was a little put off by the beginning as it was a little too "foodie" for me... But, once you get past that, which is basically an introduction to the main characters, it really picks up! I could barely put it down! I kept reading to find out what was going to happen next! The author really keeps the plot moving and was successfully able to draw me in! Highly recommended!
Gone Girl - Gillian Flynn I never even thought of reading this one! My friend got an e-copy from the library and didn't want to read it, so I glanced at it... That was my first mistake.... At first, I read a few pages and thought it was OK. But, somehow, it took hold of me and I couldn't put it down! I loved the way it went back and forth between the husband's current narration and the wife's diary from the past... I didn't have it figured out, all I knew was that something wasn't adding up in the two accounts... That is probably what drew me in! No spoilers..... lol!

Definitely recommended if you like psychological type suspense stories!
Burning the Page: The eBook Revolution and the Future of Reading - Jason Merkoski I loved this book and hated to see it end! Since the author was involved with Amazon and the beginnings of their e-books, I was expecting a book mostly about that. However, he writes about all aspects of digital publishing in general.

This book would have gotten 5 stars, except for the fact that you could not view any of the extra content that is linked in the e-book unless you create an account! The links will let you sign up through Facebook or Twitter, while going to the main page will let you create an account. Needless to say, I didn't as I would at the very least have liked to take a little look around before signing up! If you do sign up, there may be a wealth of info there.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone interested in both the rather short history and the long future of e-books! Very easy read, definitely not dry and technical!
When Gadgets Betray Us: The Dark Side of Our Infatuation With New Technologies - Robert Vamosi I really enjoyed this book! Everyone should be reminded to turn off their blue tooth connections, as anyone can connect to it! The author also points out the dangers of RFID chips, which are popping up all over. With a simple antenna, these signals can be picked up from very long distances!

Definitely a techie book, but, if you have been to defcon, you will find this WAY too elementary.... For the rest (most) of us, I think it is within reach. Another reviewer said that it is somewhat disorganized and I do have to agree. However, that did not prevent me from turning page after page!

I already knew a lot of the info, but I do love reading about techie things. What I did learn was well worth it! If you are at all interested in technology and gadgets, I would recommend you check this one out!
Confessions of a Sociopath: A Life Spent Hiding in Plain Sight - M.E. Thomas I didn't find a flow to this book.... I did have my ideas about sociopaths shattered a bit when I read this. I think I was mostly surprised to find that sociopaths seem to hold very high positions in our society....

Right off the bat, the book disturbed me, but it did get way less disturbing as it went along.... The author has a blog and quotes from it often and the font is cursive, which made it harder to read....

Overall, I was not all that impressed with this one...

Word

Word - Harry Hallman What a great story! I loved the way this was written, straight to the point, not flowery... My only complaint is that I wish it was longer, as I found myself not wanting it to end! I don't read a lot of fiction, especially short stories, as you are investing in getting to know characters and the story is over before you know it! However, this one didn't have an overload of characters and the author did a great job introducing each one. I loved the technology aspect of it, also! I don't want to give any spoilers, so I won't talk about the story, except to say that this is well worth reading!
The End of Your Life Book Club - Will Schwalbe You might think this would be a very depressing book, as it is about cancer and chemo. However, the author does a wonderful job tackling this subject!

I enjoy books about books, so I just "had" to read this one! I was not disappointed.... I found it hard to put down. Even though the subject matter was difficult, it was very uplifting. I really enjoyed that the author was able to connect with his mother through all the books they were reading at the same time! I even found a book that I want to read! She had a very interesting life and she was still able to participate in most of it throughout....

Highly recommended!

Amazing Android Apps For Dummies

Amazing Android Apps for Dummies - Daniel A. Begun Even though this book is already over two years old, there is still a lot of great info here! Yes, some of it is definitely outdated. However, I think it would be a good read for anyone that is new to the Android platform in general. Unless you already have an I-something or other! In that case, you are probably already familiar with what apps are, the various categories and all the wonderful things they can do for you!

I did read this on my new tablet, but I would suggest a paper copy, so that you could flip easily through it. I did learn about a bunch of great apps, all the ones I installed were completely free!
